A Great Working Environment

We are a small animal hospital in Raymond Terrace and Thornton, located in the lower Hunter Valley. Historical Morpeth is a 10-minute drive away, whilst Pokolbin vineyards and Newcastle's crystal clear beaches are only 20- 30 minutes. We live in an expanding economic area with subdivisions, a wide variety of public and private schools, and recreational land and water activities, including camping, fishing and hiking at national parks. An art gallery is under construction at Newcastle that will be the most extensive collection outside the capital city. Nightlife can be early or late, with options for everyone. As a locum travelling from Brisbane, a clinic needs to have all the boxes ticked for me to hop on and plane and keep coming back. My Vets at Irrawang and Thornton have certainly done that for me as I prepare for my third trip back in January ‘23.

Working in a team where you know all bases are covered from reception, nursing support, and management means you can concentrate on not just doing a good job, but enjoying it. Dedicated consult nurses to help with histories and billing, skilled staff out the back to process your in-house testing, all the toys and tools of the trade you need are part of every day.

Most importantly though, is the “vibe” that exists when a team is working well together, sharing banter whilst getting the job done.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend My Vets as a place of employment whether you were a new grad wanting to be supported whilst learning the ropes, someone just wanting a few days a week, or someone ready to do the hard yards and secure their future.

I was employed by Dr Dale Jensen for a total of 4.5 years prior to purchasing my own veterinary business in late 2021. My period of employment spanned from 2010 through to 2021. Throughout my career as a veterinary employee, My Vets has been the only hospital I could conceivably have remained at indefinitely; and this is demonstrated by my joining, leaving and returning for three separate periods of time. There are a number of reasons for this:

1. Team culture. Dale and the team at My Vets invest heavily in team development. They foster a culture of respect, accountability and ensure that every individual team member has a voice and feels heard. They have a very high staff retention rate compared to many other veterinary

practices I have worked at, largely due to their open and collaborative approach.

2. Clinical excellence. The core values of this practice centre on professionalism and clinical excellence and the protocols and standards of care are ofthe highest calibre found in general veterinary clinics across Australia.

3. Flexibility and compassion. I experienced several highly traumatising personal circumstances throughout my employment, and Dale was compassionate and accommodated my needs for time off without prejudice and with genuine care and concern. I have witnessed his care for countless other team members and the extraordinary lengths he will go to ensure that each one of his employees is given understanding through whatever challenges they may be facing.

4. Strong mentorship. Dale is an excellent clinician and is very keen to share his love of surgery and orthopaedics, as well as all his weird and wonderful gadgets with less experienced vets, encouraging them as they seek to develop in their own areas of interest. Unlike other senior veterinarians who may feel threatened by younger vets seeking specialisation, Dale sees and appreciates the broad skills, knowledge and experience that individual veterinarians within his team bring to collectively provide the best of care to the patients of My Vets Irrawang and Thornton. His leadership and the approach to team management have been inspirational and invaluable to me as I have now purchased my own business and manage my own team. Despite losing an experienced veterinary surgeon, Dale supported and congratulated me in my decision and continues to offer guidance and friendship.

5. Commitment to professional development for all team members. Not only does Dale invest in and encourage his vets to develop their skills, but offers the same opportunities for his nursing team, recognising their unique contribution to the My Vets team and empowering them to love veterinary nursing and to pursue it as an engaging career. He also has built an excellent internship program for junior nurses as they complete their veterinary nursing studies.

6. Investment in equipment and other resources. Dale loves attending the veterinary conferences in the USA, and invariably returns with some new and innovative tool/equipment that makes the job more enjoyable and efficient. He is an innovator, and able to think laterally about problems he faces. He has the depth of experience from times when veterinary medicine was not so advanced, but has actively sought to grow and implement new ideas for management of veterinary cases. He also is open to ideas for change that are brought to him by his team, which fosters engagement and contributes to job satisfaction.

7. Commitment to animal welfare and animal advocacy. My Vets is a Fear Free clinic, and have also worked hard to attain Gold accreditation with the ISFM. The focus of the entire team is on optimising animal care and welfare both in the veterinary hospital and at home. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr Dale Jensen and My Vets Irrawang & Thornton to any veterinarian seeking employment in an innovative, engaged and compassionate team, who focus on clinical excellence and animal advocacy. Please feel free to contact me via telephone or email if you have any questions regarding my experience with My Vets Irrawang & Thornton.
